Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary™ Designation

When legislation passed last year mandating continuing education for Georgia's public pension and retirement trustees, the GAPPT Board of Directors turned their focus to the Trustee School program. Their goal was to ensure the program comprehensively addressed the six educational areas listed in the Georgia Code. Since then, members of the Education Committee have spent countless hours developing new Basic and Advanced Course sessions specifically designed to meet the educational needs of Georgia's public retirement system fiduciaries.

With all the time and effort dedicated to the new curriculum, the Board of Directors believed the program deserved its own unique designation, and the Association officially adopted the name Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary™or CRPF™ in April of 2020. Going forward, this new name will be used exclusively rather than "Certified Public Pension Trustee" or "CPPT".

The  program provides consistent, regimented, and non-biased training to ensure public retirement system fiduciaries have the knowledge necessary to confidently address the challenges they face. By participating in the program, fiduciaries gain an understanding of a wide range of topics related to the public retirement system industry.

The CRPF™ Program is offered at the annual GAPPT Trustee School and is comprised Basic and Advanced Courses. To enroll in the Advanced Course, a participant must have successfully completed and passed (70% or greater) the Basic Course examination in the last two (2) years. Upon the successful completion of their Advanced Course exam, a participant is designated as a Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary™. CRPF™ certification runs from April 1st to March 31st, and designees must complete eight (8) GAPPT Continuing Education Credits (CECs) annually to maintain their certification. CECs are obtained by attending the Continuing Education Course sessions at the Trustee School, sessions at the Annual Conference, or through GAPPT online sessions.

2020 CRPF™ Recertification - Frequently Asked Questions

I earned the previous CPPT designation. What does the new designation mean for me? All current CPPT certifications will automatically become Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary™ designations. The recertification process will remain the same, with no additional testing or Continuing Education Credits (CECs) required. A replacement certificate, listing you as a CRPF™ designee, will also be provided.

Who needs to renew their CRPF™ certification? All designees who passed their Advanced Test in March 2019 or before.

Since the Eleventh Annual Conference was cancelled, what GAPPT events count toward 2020 recertification? CECs earned at the Tenth Annual Conference (September 16-19, 2019 - Lake Lanier Islands) and the Seventh Annual Trustee School - Virtual Edition (September 21, 2020) will be accepted for 2020 recertification. Designees have also been granted an extension until November 1, 2020.

Can I earn my CEC credits through GAPPT online education? Absolutely! Learn more about GAPPT online education HERE.

Are other organization's hours (or participation in a vendor's "educational" session) accepted? No. Only credits obtained at a GAPPT event or through the GAPPT online platform may be used for recertification purposes.

When did the 2020 recertification process begin? The 2020 CRPF™ recertification process began at the 2019 Annual Conference and is open until November 1, 2020.

What is required? After attending an in-person GAPPT educational event, CRPF™ designees must complete the an online CEC Submission Form attesting to at least eight (8) earned CECs. (A form is not necessary for online education.) A $30.00 recertification fee is also required.

How are recertification fees paid? Annual recertification fees were automatically added to 2020 membership renewal invoices.

What if I miss the new November 1, 2020 deadline? Your CRPF™ designation will lapse. Lapsed participants have the opportunity to renew their CRPF™ designation until December 31, 2020, but will need to obtain a total of twelve (12) CECs and pay an additional fee.

As a lapsed designee, what if I miss the December 31, 2020 late deadline? Your CRPF™ designation will expire. Participants with expired CRPF™ designations must retake the GAPPT Advanced Test to regain their certification. The Advanced Test is only administered at the Annual GAPPT Trustee School.

How do I check the status of my CRPF™ certification and confirm I have submitted the necessary requirements? CRPF™ status and a listing of submitted requirements, (recertification fees and submitted forms/hours), are included on a member's profile page. Learn more about how to navigate the website HERE.
